How to get rich: what actually works
The short answer
Most people who become rich do it slowly, through three things. They own something that grows, such as a business, property or shares. They spend less than they earn for many years. And they avoid the large losses that wipe out that progress. No method works both quickly and reliably, and anyone promising one is usually selling it.
What counts as rich?
The Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances put the median net worth of US families at $192,900 in 2022, while the mean was $1,063,700. The gap between those two numbers shows how concentrated wealth is: a small number of very large fortunes pull the average up, and the typical family sits far below it.
A more useful definition is personal. You are rich when your assets can pay for the life you want without a job. That number depends on what you spend, where you live and how long the money must last, so it will differ from anyone’s headline figure.
The three routes that really work
- Own a business. This route has the highest ceiling and the highest chance of failure. Profits can be reinvested, and a business can eventually be sold.
- Earn a high income and keep a large share of it. This is slower and more predictable. What you keep matters more than what you earn, because a high salary spent in full builds nothing.
- Invest steadily for decades. This takes the least effort and the most patience, and it depends on time more than on talent.
Most wealthy people combine these. An income funds investments, or business profits get moved into assets that do not depend on one company.
The math of a million
Here is how much you would need to set aside each month to reach $1,000,000, assuming a constant 7% annual return with monthly compounding:
- Over 40 years: about $381 a month.
- Over 30 years: about $820 a month.
- Over 20 years: about $1,920 a month.
- Over 10 years: about $5,778 a month.
With no return at all, 40 years would take $2,083 a month. These figures are arithmetic and not a forecast. Real returns move up and down, can stay negative for years, and inflation reduces what a million buys. The lesson is about time: starting ten years earlier does more than almost any clever decision later. Our guide to making a million dollars goes through each route in detail.
Why most shortcuts fail
Starting a business is a real route, but survival is not the norm. US Bureau of Labor Statistics data for private-sector establishments born in March 2013 show 79.6% still operating after one year, 50.6% after five years and 34.7% after ten. Surviving is also not the same as making the owner wealthy.
Schemes are a bigger danger than ordinary failure. The US Federal Trade Commission reports that consumers lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, including $750.6 million to business and job opportunities. Be careful whenever you see these signs:
- Promised income, or screenshots of earnings you cannot verify.
- Pressure to pay today before a price goes up.
- Money that comes mainly from recruiting other people.
- A guaranteed return on an investment.
- A request to move your savings or retirement money into something new.
What to do first
- Write down what you own, what you owe and what you spend each month.
- Pay off expensive debt, because its interest usually beats what your savings can earn.
- Build a cash reserve so a bad month does not force you to borrow.
- Raise your income with a skill that people already pay for.
- Invest regularly in something diversified and low cost that you understand.
Where Otilo fits
Otilo will not make you rich. It is a tool that produces client work, such as websites, content and shop files, for people who sell those services. If you already have clients, or you know how you will find them, it can cut the time you spend on production. You find the clients, you bill them and you deliver to them. A license costs $449 or €380 before tax per team for 12 months, and AI usage is paid separately. The offer sheet lists what it does and does not do.
Common questions
Can you get rich quickly?
It happens, but rarely, and usually through luck, an inheritance or a high-risk bet that most people lose. It is not something you can plan on.
Can AI make you rich?
AI lowers the cost of producing work, but it does not find customers or earn their trust for you. When everyone can produce the same thing cheaply, prices tend to fall, so any advantage comes from your clients, your reputation and the market you serve.
Is it too late to get rich at 50 or 60?
It is not too late to improve your position, but compounding has less time to work. Focus on debt, spending and earned income, and do not take risks with money you cannot replace.
